Wat Pong Sanuk, Award of Merit 2008 Wat Pong Sanook is very closed to where we leave in Lampang, but I did not realize where it is since We went to participate in the Light Waving Rite at Wat Pratoo Ton Pueng as intended, we went there by accident as we saw many people were going there so we stopped and found this was Wat Pong Sanuk. Once I heard that this temple received a Heritage Award Winners from UNESCO as ” Award of Merit 2008 ”
Wat Pong Sanook is located in the center of Pong Sanuk Community, it is one of very important temple of Lampang Province and it become closely tied to this area’s history. Wat Pong Sanuk was built during the reign of King Anantayot in 1223 BE or AD 680 at the same time that Lampang was founded. The temple received its name from the people of Chiang Saen, who migrated to this area. This temple is also the site of the ” Sao Rak Maung” ( The first sacred pillar ) of Lampang, it is the only temple in Thailand that shows both Lanna and Burmese – Chinesed influences. Phra That Jom Krai, as highly revered Buddha image is also housed here..
